Actually, I had an idea. Months ago. I put it in a note on my phone labeled “ideas,” and forgot about it. With the few ideas I’ve had, usually after the “spark” hits me, I start writing in my head. That’s when I know it’s time to drop what I’m doing, grab a pen and paper, and get it out. I’m working on not judging my work and just letting it come. Editing will come later! But that didn’t happen this time. I just had an idea, no spark.

Anyway, a few days ago I started writing a little something in my head. I pulled out my notebook, wrote it down, and then realized it worked perfectly as an opening for my months-old idea. A few scenes started to flash through my head. I considered scribbling them down, but they weren’t very well formed and I couldn’t figure out how. So instead, I did something I’ve never done before.

I started to pre-write.

Last night, I wrote in my notebook the details that I could clearly see about the two characters that I currently have. I also wrote some details about some creatures I plan to create, as well as a few sentences that were flashing in my mind. All told, I only wrote about a page in my small notebook of details, but it’s something.

I’m trying to actively slow myself down. I tend to get so ahead of myself, and then when things don’t happen as fast as I want them to, I get frustrated and give up entirely. I’m really excited that I pre-wrote some things, and I’m going to work on it more tonight. I’ll also research some other pre-writing methods to try.

Have any of you tried pre-writing? What works for you?

Overflowing with love,
